Last week I tried for over an hour to do simulation 3a. I did it step by step at the same time as friend who was doing it on their own computer. Despite us doing the same thing, I never received emails, and so I couldn't receive credit. I eventually gave up on the simulation, but in my class lecture today my professor said that 3b will go off of the work that we did on 3a. She suggested I come here and see if 3a can be fixed on my account.

Sorry you're stuck but there's almost always a pretty easy fix! Do NOT try to start all over again, eg. uninstall Max's Pitch Package, etc. That can make things worse.

Ok, so I found a few minor mistakes, like you used your own name when you created the user account for Riley. (I fixed that.) But then I tried switching Riley's email to my own and adding a fake lead with Bay Area Location = Yes and it worked - I got the email just fine. So I'm not sure why you weren't getting the emails for Riley. Unless you were getting them but they were going to your Spam folder? (Or you were forgetting to check the Assign using active assignment rule checkbox each time you created the lead?)
I'm going to change Riley's email address back to yours now. SF will send a verification email to that address and you'll need to open it and click the verification link so that the new address is verified and saved for Riley. Let me know when you've done that.
Then I'm going to add a lead that should trigger an email to Riley (you) and let's see if you get it, ok?

Did it work for your friend but not for you?
And did you get any of the emails or none?
Did you check the Help FAQ about that issue? (It tells the common problems and the fixes.)
Did you stop at the point of the emails or did you go on?
Once you've answered those, do these 3 steps so I can access your account and see what the problem is and let me know when you've done them:
Click on the character at the upper right corner and then, in the popup, click “Settings”
On the left vertical menu, click on “Grant Account Login Access”
On the row for The Max Labs Project, use the menu to change “—No Access—“ to “1-Month…”
